Lineman pre-employment boot camps!
The NUITF, with the cooperation of our member utilities, periodically conducts pre-employment “boot camps” as an entry to our industry. These boot camps are intended to provide prospective employers with an additional screening tool in their selection of candidates for employment. As students in the boot camp, each individual will be exposed to pole climbing, the tools used to do our work, the materials used to construct powerlines, and some very basic electrical theory. None of this will replace any part of a formal apprenticeship, but will allow the student to “try it out” before formally applying for a job as an apprenticeship. It also gives prospective employers an opportunity to see the candidates in a more realistic atmosphere than a job interview. Those who successfully complete the six weeks of training will receive a certificate of completion, an excellent addition to their resume.

On November 16th, 9 people successfully completed the first six-week pre-employment boot camp for those that would like to work in the utility industry. Our host utility, Kansas City Power and Light, hosted an open house the last week of boot camp to give prospective employers an opportunity to observe and talk to the participants.
Boot Camp to begin in Alabama on January 24.
On January 24, lineman pre-employment boot camp will begin in Alabama. Up to 25 individuals will start the six-week boot camp, which will take place at the Alabama Power Company training center in Calera. Students are registered at Jefferson State College in Birmingham for this non-credit course. Another boot camp is scheduled to begin shortly after the first one ends.
